"Read me a story". If you have children, you are
familiar with these words. Kids love being read to.
They are fascinated by picture books and the magical
world of fantasy that they provide. As your child grows
older, and tires of picture books (baby books as they will
call them), keep up with the child! Let the books mature
with the child to keep their interest. Do not be the type
of parent that stops reading to your child just because
they are too big to sit on your lap.

Television and video games have become a way of life
for many families with children, and it is a sad state of
affairs. Their children do not read at home for pleasure,
and the parents wonder why they have low reading
comprehension abilities. Turn off the T.V.! As long
as your toddler, child, or adolescent will allow you to
read to them, keep on doing so. It is the best and
most constructive way to bridge generation gaps, and
enjoy quality time as a family. Make it as pleasurable as
possible for all; in the winter, have hot chocolate by the
fire, in the summer, grab some Lemonade and head out
to the porch. Read scary stories in a tent made of
blankets and chairs.

There are literally endless benefits to reading to your
children. The child will develop a love for books. They
will be more apt to seek knowledge on their own. It will
expand their comprehension skills and increase their
vocabulary. The more a child or teen reads, or is read
to, the more they will benefit from it. The more they
will develop reading, vocabulary and comprehension
skills that will help them succeed for the rest of their life.

One of the best gifts you can give your child is their very
own library card. It will teach them how to be
responsible by knowing their due dates. They will feel like
you trust them and are mature enough to have their own
card. Plus, it will make them want to read! They should
love going to the library like they love going to the toy
store.

As long as books exist, you have not lost the opportunity
to be able to start reading to your child. It does not
matter if you stopped reading to them years ago. If they
will let you, you should read to them, and with them. Find
out what your child is currently interested in and get
books to match the subject. Children crave attention.
They need it to feel wanted and loved. The benefits of
reading will last a lifetime. They will be smarter, they will
remember the time that you gave up for their benefit, and
they will love you for it.
